Painful shoulder is a common problem for many at some point of time. With a better understanding of the shoulder joints and their working, one can evaluate reasons for the painful shoulder and easily solve the problem. The evaluation of a shoulder problem consists of history of the problem, inspection, motion testing and palpation of the shoulder.
Most common painful shoulder syndromes:
Subacromial bursitis and supraspinatus tendonitis: The reason for these problems is a painful arc, between 60-120 degrees of abduction.
Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder): In this condition there is a gradual onset of diffuse pain in your shoulder. Also, there is a restricted passive and active range of motions in all directions.
Tear or rupture of the supraspinatus tendon: It is seen after trauma in younger patients. but it has a gradual onset in older ones. In this syndrome, one experiences pain along with weakened active abduction.
Diagnosis:
Most shoulder problems can be evaluated without the help of imaging procedures. Only in case of rotator cuff tear or rupture, the problem has to be diagnosed with arthrography or magnetic resonance imaging.
Treatment:
Many shoulder syndromes can be treated with steroid injections or oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Your physician chooses the best suitable therapy depending on your age, medications and the severity of symptoms. Some syndromes have specific treatments. So, in any case, consult an orthopedic consultant for an effective treatment of the problem.
