How to Manage a Migraine?

Migraine is dissimilar with a regular headache. The pain in migraine is usually one sided with a constant pounding and hammering like sensation and can last for several days.

Definition and Symptoms-
It is a form of vascular headache that happens due to enlargement of blood vessels
(Vasodilatation) with the release of chemicals from the nerves attached with it. Migraine attacks the sympathetic nervous system. The pain is habitually unilateral but sometimes it can be bilateral also. Sensitivity to light and sounds, nausea, vomiting, facial pallor, cold hands and feet are associated with it. An attack may last for 4 to 72 hrs.

Causes-
Numerous reasons in form of hormonal change, sleep pattern, weather, food, expansion and contraction of blood vessels in brain, muscle contraction in brain, stress, anxiety, lights and sounds, foods with nitrites and nitrates, low blood sugar etc can result in the eruption of a migraine attack.
Diagnosis and Treatment-
Symptoms are the first step to diagnosis, and this problem may start as early as in childhood. The pain may be mild or severe one. Tests are conducted in form of blood test, MRI, CT scan and a spinal tap. Treatment can be done through medication as well as non-medication ways.

Medication- analgesics like aspirin, paracetamol or codeine are usually used for mild pain. For external application a balm or an ointment is rubbed however that is not useful in severe cases. Tonics, rubefacients, relaxants, digestive tonics, hormonal herbs, pain relievers, decongestants and mucous membrane tonics are given depending on the problem and requirement.(source)

Non-medication-

it is generally managed by herbs because of their therapeutic quality. The combination of herbs has primary and secondary action. It is accompanied with certain exercises based on individual life style and health condition.Food and nutrition in migraine management-

Linolenic and linoleic fatty acids are important in management. It is found in abundance in meat and is good for repairing the cell membranes. The human body is not capable of producing these acids and has to rely on external sources. Rapeseed oil, and other green vegetables and beans are good source of these oils. Consume low fat milk, game and salads. A well balanced diet is the ultimate solution to it.

The fact it that there is no proper cure for migraine. By practicing certain Precautionary measures, taking preventions and following a lifestyle the problem could be prevaricated to a certain extent.
