The world of fitness is surrounded by tips, half-truths and myths referred by people for whom certain workouts have proved to be helpful. - Running on the treadmill is less stressful for the knees than running on the pavement is: Running can affect the knees irrespective of whether you’re running on the pavement or the treadmill say experts. In addition, Todd Schlifstein, a clinical instructor at the New York University Medical Center’s Rusk Institute believes that one can reduce stress at the knees by varying your workouts. For example, running with cardio exercises can reduce knee strain.
- Belly fat will disappear with crunches or with the help of an abs machine: Experts opine that fat cannot be last from just one part of the body no matter what you try to achieve it through. Instead, a workout that combines cardiovascular activities with strength training can help reduce overall body weight and fat.
- An aerobic workout leaves its effects hours after rest: Experts say that this is true to the extent that you don’t start believing that you are losing as much calories as you’ve desired to lose.
- Swimming helps in losing weight: Experts are of the opinion that swimming unless not done for a few hours it is not helpful for losing weight. Instead, swimming works best for toning the muscles, increasing lung capacity and burns the tension.
- Yoga is helpful for reducing back pain: Experts are of the opinion that yoga helps in reducing back pain only when it is related to muscle strain. Otherwise, back pain arising due to other chronic underlying causes like gall bladder stones, etc cannot be healed with yoga.
- Perspiration is an indicator for working out effectively: Experts state that sweat is not the only indicator for working out effectively. Infact, one can exercise without shedding a drop of sweat like consider walking or light weight training to experience the same.
- You’re not overstraining as long as you’re feeling comfortable continuing the exercises or workout: Schlifstein says that one of the biggest mistakes people commit is to do too much too soon. He says much of the overstraining is realized after a day or two. It is also not advisable to go back to the same intensity of the exercises.
- Machines are a safer way to exercise because you think they cannot make any mistakes after all: Things can go wrong say experts if the machine is not fixed to move correctly according to your weight and height.
- You can realize the benefits of exercising only when you experience some strain or pain: Though feeling a little stretched and exasperated during the first few days of exercising is normal, experts say that shouldn’t be misunderstood for pain. Infact, most doctors’ advice people to give their muscles some rest in case of any pain. Moreover, pain is actually the sign of overstraining, performing the exercise incorrectly or with the wrong intensity or probably a sign for an underlying injury.
