It is very important to recognize the right foods so that the body is able to digest, utilize and assimilate as many nutrients into the body. Correct food combining with an equal and effective balance of proteins, carbs, vitamins and minerals will do your body good.
To understand the digestive chemistry of foods, it is essential to understand that proteins need an acidic environment to aid digestion whereas fats and carbohydrates require an alkaline medium for proper digestion. Digestive process is compromised when foods with opposite conditions are eaten at a time.
Top 10 Perfect Food Combining Tricks
Some effective and essential food combining tricks are listed here below:
- Eat acid foods (milk, meat, fish, eggs, citrus fruits, peanuts, cashew nuts, vegetable oil, etc) and starch foods (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, cereals, etc) separately: Experts opine that Acidic foods neutralize the effects of alkaline which is required for the digestion of starch foods. Indigestion and fermentation are the most probable outcomes of acidic foods combined with starch foods.
- Eat proteins and carbohydrates separately: Proteins require an acidic medium to aid digestion and carbohydrates require an alkaline medium. Don’t combine the two for indigestion to follow.
- Eat one food containing protein during one meal: Though proteins form a part of almost all foods, some foods which have higher protein concentrates take longer to digest. This time for digestion can vary from 2 to 6 hours depending on the complexity of the foods. Also, protein foods eaten with high sugar or carbohydrate-concentrated foods can result in fermentation which is the most common cause of indigestion and gas.
- Eat acidic foods and proteins separately: Experts opine that acidic foods check the secretion of digestive foods which is required for protein digestion. Improperly digested proteins decay to form harmful poisons.
- Proteins and fats should be eaten separately: Experts opine that some foods like nuts contain 50% fat and require hours for digestion. It is believed that fats check the secretion of gastric juices and remains undigested till the gastric juices help the protein molecules to get digested. When proteins are taken alongside fats, gastric metabolism decreases with lipid metabolism. Free fat or fried foods are also said to interfere with gastric metabolism.
- Proteins and sugar should be eaten separately: Experts opine that protein foods and high sugar-concentrated foods like fruits, etc can be a dangerous combination for the tummy. The digestive process can be interfered with when fruits which require an alkaline medium and proteins which require an acidic medium are eaten together.
- Sugar foods and starch foods should be eaten separately: Sugar foods like fruits don’t require much time to get digested. On the other concentrated starchy foods do require as long as 6-8 hours to get digested properly. Acidic fruits are also expected to neutralize the effects of sugar and starch-concentrated foods and should not be eaten together say experts. Ptyalin is an enzyme which plays a major role in chewing the food. When acidic foods or fruits are eaten the ptyalin is deactivated which can impeded chewing and consequently digestion. For example, experts opine that tomatoes should never be mixed with starchy foods like breads or potatoes.
- Watermelons should be eaten alone: Experts are of the opinion that watermelons combine with no food and should be eaten separately.
- Avoid desserts: Desserts like ice cream should be kept away say experts. Desserts prior to a meal are considered to be heavy for the stomach thereby leading to fermentation.
- Smaller number of meals: Experts recommend smaller number of meals with no mixing of carbohydrates, proteins or fats together. For example, a fruity meal is considered ideal for breakfast, starch, salad and non-starchy vegetables are ideal for lunch and proteins, salad and non-starchy vegetables are ideal dinner menu. Experts also state that a combination of proteins and carbohydrates can take longer to digest than just proteins, carbohydrates or fruits alone.
Starch, fats, green vegetables and sugary foods can be eaten together as they require either an alkaline or neutral medium for digestion. Similarly, proteins, acidic foods and green vegetables can be eaten together because they require an acidic or neutral medium for proper digestion. However, experts opine that the following food combinations should be avoid gas, fermentation or indigestion – proteins and starch, proteins, fats, starches, and acidic fruits.

Any references (peer-reviewed, scientific journals) for this seemingly random set of suggestions?

These suggestions dont make any sense and are all contradictory.
Its impossible to follow these rules and make a meal, unless each meal only has 1 food in it.
For example, carbs for breakfast. Fat for lunch and protein for dinner. (but no milk allowed on your cereal)
Come to think of eat, no dairy or meat allowed at all, as they both include fats and protein ?
It also starts off by saying eat equal ammounts of protein fat and carbs, and then list s 10 reasons of why not to combine them ?
This needs detailed explanation, or ignoring completely.
Can anyone clarify ?
