Can Hefty People Run?

Most hefty or overweight people are recommended not to take to running because it can strain the knees, back and the hips. However, if that were true how would the Runners World columnist John Bingham turn from a 240 pound chunk to a marathoner? Well, as he did and as suggested by many hefty people should start slowly and gradually to be able to shed the extra pounds in time.

Bingham for example in his book, “Running for Mortals” claims that he began with walking and then blended running gradually into his fitness regime. He says quiet emphatically that he didn’t try doing anything that would turn painful for him. It took him nearly 6 months to get to walking or even running 3 miles.

Accomplished coaches like Maggie Shapiro, co-owner of the Washington area Potomac River Running suggests the same – gradual and steady start! In addition, Maggie believes that hefty or overweight people should plan constructively and build on it gradually or else the excitement can cause them to suffer from acute injuries.

Maggie adds that most of the hip, ankle or knee injuries arise on account of either misuse or overuse of muscles and/or joints. Therefore, there are a number of essentials that the hefty, obese or overweight people need to consider before giving in to running. Those basics include:

Once an overweight person finds a solution for managing his or her weight correctly, then he or she can handle the stresses on the hips, knee or back equally well says Maggie. Cardiovascular health and fitness can not just make you fit enough to walk or run but can make you a tough contender on the tracks.

Size doesn’t really matter when it comes to running or walking; just that you gotta take it little easy. A through medical examination is a must and should decide whether you’re fit enough to take to walking, jogging and eventually running.

Overweight and obese usually stay caged in their homes because of the stigma attached to huge and hefty people. Walking, jogging or running can help you interact and socialize with new people, friends and neighbors. Life is really not worth living it from the outside but from the inside too; outside being the way life seems and inside being the paths left for you to discover!
