A survey which was presented at the American Psychological Association (Boston) suggests that most American college students have considered suicide at some point of time. This clearly is not a good sign say psychologists. With higher levels of competition and the difficulty to survive on average scores, the youth are feeling miserable about their efforts going to vain.
The survey showed that American students have a higher tendency to suicidal thoughts than the rest of the population. WHO (World Health Organization) reports suggest that the rest of the population set apart from the students accounted for just 15.3% of the suicidal instincts.
Professor David Drum, teaching psychology at the University of Texas has questioned as many as 26000 graduate and undergraduate students across 70 institutions till date. The professor says quiet surprisingly that suicidal thought was as common an experience as other habits were such as alcohol abuse, eating disorders and depression.
The survey revealed disturbing results such as:
- Everyone reported at least 1 instance of suicidal thinking at some point in time
- More than half of the students accepted that they could fit into the category of suicide ideation (formulated planning or imagining a suicide before the act of committing suicide)
- About 15% accepted that they had at some point seriously considered on committing suicide
- More than 5% of them accepted to attempting suicide
The survey suggests suicide to be the second major cause of deaths amongst students though the National Alliance on Mental Health gives suicide the 9th rank for causing deaths among teens in the US.
There are several ways to boosting one’s confidence or coping with challenges in this competitive world; one being the physical aspect where you try developing a more impressive personality – the way you walk, talk, wear, etc and the other being shaking up your emotional side and becoming mentally strong, thinking positive and having a control over your emotions which is best brought about through meditation techniques, yoga, tai chi and other kinds of exercises, a healthy diet, good night’s sleep and by maintaining interactive social circle.
Today’s youth is the light of tomorrow and they should be shown the light instead of the dark. Failures are a part of life and they need to be overcome to succeed. Consider your options to better situations and move ahead without fear because life is all about falling and rising. Paulo Coelho, a Brazilian author says “Life is too short to allow myself the luxury of living it so badly”. Stick to this philosophy and you’ll never say that you’ve failed again!
