Is Music Beneficial for Exercising?

A new research by Brunei’s University’s School of Sport and Education reveals that rhythmic music can be highly beneficial for exercising. When participants were made to exercise with music, they were found to have more endurance and they derived more pleasure from their workout.

The Research by Brunei’s University’s School of Sport and Education:
About 30 participants exercised on a treadmill while listening to rock or pop music, which included tracks by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madonna, and Queen.

The researchers observed that music increased the endurance of the participants by 15%. They also derived greater pleasure from their workout. The participants felt motivated and positive towards exercise even while they were close to physical exhaustion.

Rhythmic, hip hop music enables us to enjoy the workout. Because of this reason, many gyms play good music. Also, people who jog or run carry an Ipod or mp3 player. Apart from cardiovascular exercises, music can be beneficial in body building. Body builders usually use loud, aggressive music while doing strength training exercises.

Another area where music be beneficial is in rehabilitation. Rehabilitation programs incorporate running and walking for patients who are suffering with health problems such as heart problems, obesity etc. Music is a great motivator for exercising. Hence, Public health practitioners can use music to motivate people who are undergoing rehabilitation to exercise.

Fast music, thus, can fight inactivity. So, if you find it difficult to exercise, put on some fast music. This can help you to achieve your fitness goals and improve your health.
