Stretching is an important element in exercise. In stretching, a muscle group is elongated to its full capacity. Stretching has numerous benefits such as increased flexibility and posture. Hence, it should not be neglected over cardio and strength training exercises
Benefits of Stretching:
Strength training and cardio workout can tighten your muscles. Stretching reduces the muscle tension and makes you more flexible. Stretching also prevents injuries, improves blood circulation, promotes better posture and increases the range of motion of the joints
Best Way to do Stretching Exercises:
Stretching should be done along with your regular workout. Here are some things you should keep in mind while stretching:
- Warm up before stretching: Muscles are more flexible after exercising or after your warm up. Hence, stretching after warm up prevents the risk of injury. Stretching after completing your exercises is even better
- Stretch comfortably: Stretching should be comfortable i.e. you should not feel the pain while stretching. Muscles should be relaxed while stretching. Hence, if you feel pain while stretching, back off your stretch to the point where you feel comfortable
- Breathe naturally: Breathe naturally and rhythmically. This will help you to relax and stretch properly
- Stretch slowly: Stretch slowly and do not be in a hurry to complete your stretch. The stretch should be held in a position for 10 to 30 seconds before releasing. Stretching slowly avoids jerking and sudden movement
- Stretch evenly: Stretch the muscles on the both sides of your body evenly
- Do not bounce/ overstretch: Make sure you do not bounce or overstretch as it can injure your muscles
Stretching is very beneficial and should be done during every workout. Hence, stretch properly to get more flexibility and more out of your exercises
