Am I drinking enough water? This can be a big question in your mind. Nowadays, there are many recommendations on how much to drink water, such as 8 glasses, 2 liters etc. However, the amount of water you need varies based on your health, location, your level of activity every day etc.
Water performs important functions in our body such as carrying of nutrients, flushing out the toxins, providing moisture for your skin, ear, nose and throat. Amount of Water Needed Every Day:
Are you drinking enough water? Here are few approaches to estimate the amount of water needed every day:
- Recommended amount of water intake daily: The Institute of Medicine recommends a water intake of 2.2 liters for women and 3 liters of water for men. This includes water from food, beverages and daily drinking water
- Eight Glasses a Day: Many people follow the approach of drinking 8 glasses of water of 8-ounce quantity each. This will come up to 1.9 liters. About 1.9 liters of water plus the amount of water from food can meet your daily water requirement
- 2 liters of water: Drinking of 2 liters of water is based on the replacement approach. According to this, we lose about 1. 5 liters water through urination. Another liter of water is lost through sweating, breathing etc. This constitutes to about 2. 5 liters of water required. However, you will be replacing about 20% of this through food intake. Hence, if you drink 2 liters of water, it would be sufficient for the body
Drink enough water every day so that you feel thirsty only on rare occasions. People who exercise need to drink more water to replace the water lost through sweat. Also, pregnant women and breastfeeding women need to drink more water.
Hot, humid climate conditions and certain illnesses may also require you to drink more water. Hence, if you have any doubts, contact your doctor to know if you are drinking enough water
