Exercising outdoors helps you to enjoy the greenery and fresh air. However, physical activity under the sun can put extra strain on the body and increase the risk of heat-related injury or illness.
Sun’s heat can result in illness and also death. People who exercise regularly especially athletes should be careful while exercising in the sun. By following certain precautions, you can safely exercise in the sun.
Ways to Exercise in the Sun:
Here are the ways to exercise in the sun:
- Exercise during cooler portions of the day: Exercise in the early morning or late evening, when the temperature is not high. Avoid exercising from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m., when heat and humidity are high
- Stay hydrated: Stay hydrated by drinking water before and during the time of exercise. For this, always carry a water bottle with you. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration, nausea, kidney failure and death.
- Replace the salt and electrolytes: While exercising, your body also loses salt and electrolytes. Drinking excessive water without replacing the salt can lead to hyponatremia, which can cause muscle cramps, seizures, and also death. Hence, replace salt and electrolytes by drinking a sports drink or an electrolyte drink
- Wear light-colored, loose clothing: Wear light-colored clothing which would help to deflect the heat. Wearing loose clothing would enable easy evaporation of sweat. Also, wearing a tightly woven shirt would protect you from UV rays
- Wear sunscreen: Wear a sunscreen of SPF greater than 15 to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Wearing a hat can also protect you from UV rays and sunburn
It is very important to stop exercising if you feel dizzy, lightheaded or nauseous. While exercising in the sun, taking frequent breaks is recommended. Increasing the intensity of exercise gradually will help you to acclimatize to the heat.
If the temperature is high, low-intensity exercise is recommended. It is vital to follow the proper ways to exercise in the sun. This will protect you from heat-related problems and also help you have a proper workout.
