Steps such as eating healthy diet, exercising, and avoiding obesity can cut down cancer rates by one-third in the United States. This research was done by World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research. This research studied about 12 types of cancers and the effect of healthy diet and exercise on preventing these cancers.
According to researchers, cancer can be cut down by one-third if people implement the following following steps:
- Healthy Diet
- Physical Activity
- Controlling weight and Preventing Obesity
This report is named as “Policy and Action for Cancer prevention.” This research did not include smoking cessation, which alone can reduce cancer rates by one-third. This research was also carried out in Great Britain, Brazil and China. It was found that healthy diet, physical activity, and controlling weight can reduce cancer rates by one-third in these countries too.
The report, Policy and Action for Cancer prevention, made several recommendations to the government, schools, industry, and individuals on ways to prevent cancer. Here are a few recommendations:
- Government has to encourage walking routes and cycling paths, which will help in physical exercise
- Schools and workplaces have to bar unhealthy foods through vending machines
- Individuals should read labels and use nutrition guides to eat healthy
- Food industry has to give public health the utmost priority
The researchers fear that the cancer rates may soar due less physical activity, increased intake of high-calorie foods, and high obesity rates. However, the good news is that cancer rates can be greatly reduced by healthy diet, physical activity, and controlling weight
