Using antiperspirants and deodorants can be helpful if you are concerned with excessive sweating and body odor. antiperspirants reduce excessive sweating and prevent body odor by blocking the sweat pores on the body. Hence, it is advisable not to use anti-antiperspirants while exercising.
About Sweating:
Our body sweats to regulate the body temperature. The moisture from the sweat glands keeps the body cool. Even though the body sweat is odorless, bacteria can act on the sweat and produce odor. The bacteria is mostly present in the underarms and other areas of the body, where it is moist and warm.
To get rid of body odor while exercising, most of us use either deodorants or antiperspirants. Some products have both deodorant and antiperspirants together.
Difference Between Deodorants and Antiperspirants:
Deodorants reduce body odor by masking the smell and slowing the growth of bacteria. However, antiperspirants reduce body odor by blocking the sweat glands. Aluminum compounds present in the anti-antiperspirants enter the sweat glands and block. Hence, a person wearing an antiperspirant would sweat less and this controls the body odor.
While exercising, it is better to use a deodorant rather than an antiperspirant. Deodorants mask the body odor instead of blocking the sweat glands. Certain studies indicate that the aluminum compounds present in antiperspirants are harmful .
Usage of antiperspirants while exercising is ok as long as your body does not get warmed due to the blockage of sweat glands. If you are concerned about the effects of antiperspirants, switch to a good deodorant and wear cotton clothing to manage the sweat.
