A new study by University of Newcastle has found out that pedometers help pre-teens and teens to stay active. The researchers of this study reviewed about 14 international studies, and 12 out of 14 studies showed that pedometers encouraged the kids to be active. While previous studies focused on the impact of pedometers on adults, this is the first study which analyzed the effect of pedometer on kids.
Pedometer is a portable electronic device which can record the number of steps taken. This device can be clipped onto the belt, above the knee, waistband etc. It can also calculate the distance covered if the length of your step is entered. Pedometer can remind you to be active and enable you to set daily walking goals.
The Study:
The researchers from the University of Newcastle reviewed 14 international studies, which kept track of physical activity of kids who used pedometers. The children were aged 8 to 11 years and teens were aged 14 to 17 years.
The researchers found out that 12 in 14 studies showed that pedometers increased physical activity among kids. The use of pedometers increased the number of steps to 500 to 2500 steps daily. Teens and pre-teens who previously were inactive, increased their levels of physical activity when they used pedometers.
Previous studies showed that adults using pedometers increased their physical activity, decreased their body mass index and blood pressure.
Pedometers enable people to set activity goals and provide up-to-date information about their activity levels. Using them can encourage young people to increase their daily physical activity.

Wow what a great idea for kids. Positive feed back helps the kids reach goals. I bet they even compete with there friends at little. Imagine instead of fighting with your kids to get off the video game and go to bed because they want to make it one more level your fighting with them because they want to get 100 more steps in to beat there friends.
