People train harder and longer to increase their performance. However, lack of rest in between the training can lead to fatigue, muscle pain, irritability and other problems. This condition is which is caused due to overtraining and lack of rest is known as overtraining syndrome.

A proper training program includes both overload and rest. Increase in overload and/or less rest and result in both physical and psychological symptoms, known as overtraining syndrome.

How to Treat Overtraining Syndrome:
If you have signs of overtraining, you would have to stop training for 3 to 5 days or several weeks depending upon the extent of overtraining. Good intake of fluids is recommended during this period. After the symptoms of overtraining are resolved, you can return to low intensity training and slowly increase the workload.

According to overtraining syndrome research, rest is the primary way to treat this problem. Low intensity training can also help in recovery. Overtraining syndrome can be properly diagnosed by a doctor. He/she would conduct take physical examination or other tests to rule out other disease behind the symptoms.

Preventing Overtraining Syndrome:

To prevent overtraining syndrome, you can also keep a training log to record the signs, symptoms, or how you feel about the training. This will helpĀ  you to detect the signs of overtraining and stop when required.

Rest is important for the muscles to repair. A good balance of exercise and rest will enable you to have a proper workout, without the effects of overtraining.
