Nordic Skiing

Nordic skiing is a type of skiing that can be both fun and a great workout.

“Nordic” is a term used to describe any type of skiing in which the heel of one’s boot is not attached to the ski it rests on. Because the boot is only attached at the toe, it gives the skier more flexibility.

Two common and popular types of Nordic skiing include cross-country skiing and ski jumping which are only possible with the kind of agility allowed by Nordic skis. Both of them are great fitness building workouts.

Ski jumping

If you’re interested in a thrilling sport that’s a much of an art as a competition, ski jumping is certainly something to consider. The premise is simple enough; ski down a hill, building momentum until you hit a ramp, which you fly off and do whatever tricks you’re able before you land.

This sport is dangerous and time consuming, and isn’t recommended for casual skiers and those without a lot of time on their hands. If you’re interested, you’ll first to find a place that has both a jump-capable slope and snow for a large quantity of the year. You’ll definitely want a professional trainer to assist in teaching you the craft; this isn’t something that’s easy to pick up on your own.

Jumping requires full control of your body. You’ll want to do full body workouts regularly: arms, legs, core—everything. You’ll need it all if you’re going to be doing tricks while flying through the air, trying not to die.

Cross country skiing

This is a much more casual, amateur-friendly sport that is available wherever there is snow. You simply propel yourself wherever you wish to go over the snow on skis.

Many resorts have special cross country tracks that take you to scenic overlooks. You don’t have to go to a resort, though. As long as you have Nordic skis and a few inches of snow, you can enjoy this sport anywhere.

You don’t need any highly specialized skill set to cross country ski, at least casually. A short training session should be enough to give you the basics.

Cross country skiing is also a fantastic workout that exercises much of your body. If you’re not in good shape, you’ll probably be very sore and tired after even a fairly short cross country session.
