Planning Diet That Suits Your Exercise Program

Posted on July 28, 2007 in Diet and Fitness

Everybody should have a healthy diet whether or not they are exercising. Everyone should eat more fruits and vegetables and less animal fat. There is nothing different about the ideal diet for a person in an exercise program. But, research shows that when people do exercise, they will eat more to make up for the extra energy they are burning up. This means that with exercise one can add good things like protein, vitamins and minerals to diet without gaining weight.

Some studies have been done where inactive people are taken and put in one group in an exercise program alone and another in an exercise program combined with a high-protein or other special diet. These studies found that exercise greatly increases aerobic capacity, muscle strength and muscle function. However, none of them found that dietary changes alone made much difference.

Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating contribute to obesity and a number of chronic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Especially, obesity has reached epidemic proportions. Moreover, the epidemic is not limited to adults. The percentage of young people who are overweight has more than doubled in the last 20 years.

Importance of Physical Activity

Activity decreases with age, and sufficient activity is less common among women than men and among those with lower incomes and less education. Insufficient physical activity is not limited to adults. More than a third of young people in grades 9-12 do not regularly engage in vigorous physical activity. Even, daily participation in high school physical education classes is also dropping. But experts suggest doing regular physical activity for the following benefits

Remember that physical activity need not be strenuous to be beneficial. People of all ages benefit from moderate-intensity physical activity, such as 30 minutes of brisk walking five or more times a week.

Importance of Healthy Eating

Good nutrition is one of the keys to good health. This means making sure you regularly eat foods that have a lot of vitamins and minerals in them, as well as foods that are not high in fat.

Research shows that good nutrition can help to lower people’s risk for many chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, some cancers, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
