According to WHO “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Anything that disrupts the physical, mental and social well-being of a person can cause ill health in him. There are many factors that contribute to one’s illness. The main causes of disease and ill health can be grouped as follows:
- infectious medical causes of disease and Ill health
- non-infectious medical causes of disease and ill health
- social causes of disease and ill health
Infectious Medical Causes of Disease and Ill Health
Infectious diseases spread from person to person. They are caused by microorganisms that infect the body. They spread in many ways from one to another. Some important kinds of organisms that cause infections are bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.
Non-infectious Medical Causes of Disease and Ill Health
Non-infectious diseases have many different causes. But they are not caused by germs, bacteria or other living organisms that attack the body. They do not spread from one person to another. Antibiotics do not help cure non-infectious diseases. Some examples of non-infectious causes of disease are: traumatic injuries, poisoning, abnormalities which develop during fetal development or soon after birth, disorders of the immune system, old age and degeneration, metabolic problems etc.
Social causes of Ill health
Health is affected by the social conditions in which people live and work. Poor social conditions and poverty increase the risks of ill health and disease. The social causes include poor sanitation, nutritional deficiencies, violence and accidents, poor water supply, little or no access to health services, lack of safety at work, overcrowded or poorly maintained housing, insufficient or poor quality food, environmental pollution, bad sanitation, stress, lack of exercise due to working, and traveling patterns etc.
Many causes of diseases and ill health are related to the social conditions of our lives because everything, including health, is dependent of social conditions we live in. If the social conditions are not good, then both physical and mental heath get badly affected.
Proper understanding of these causes can help you care for your health in a better way. Therefore, try to get as much information as possible about the diseases and the other factors of ill health. If we take care of the causes of ill health and eliminate them, we can stay healthy and fit. We should be cautious while interacting with infected person. Besides this, if we keep ourselves clean and the surroundings hygienic then we can greatly avoid falling ill. We can also start by inculcating healthy habits and maintaining a balanced diet. A nutritional diet will help your body become strong and maintain good health. A strict fitness regime and proper lifestyle will keep you active and productive in the long run. Look at the brighter side, you don’t have to spend huge amount of money on health care services. Doesn’t that sound great????
